The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home?

A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a potentially longer period of remote teaching.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

All families will be sent the timetable, apps and expectations of them during the home learning via email. The parents/carers will complete a form that will be attached to the email to ensure they have the correct technology/passwords to gain access to the home learning. Within the first few days of home learning, it will be based on remote teaching that will be sent via email that will focus on Maths, Reading and Writing (no live teaching will be planned for the first 48 hours).

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, within Art we will not be able to teach the full curriculum due to resources that children will not have access to at home.

Remote teaching and study time each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?



At least 2 hours per day. This will include activities based on play and not continuously sat watching a screen.

Key Stage 1

At least 3 hours per day.

Key Stage 2

At least 4 hours per day.

Accessing remote education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

Children in EYFS will access remote learning via Tapestry. They will receive videos, tasks and feedback on this app. Children in Year 1 to Year 6 will access all tasks via the school website or Teams.

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

All parents/carers will fill out a form during the first two days of remote learning and this will inform the staff at school who needs support with technology. We will then arrange a school laptop or iPad to be dropped off to or picked up by the pupils that need it.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

  • live teaching (online lessons via Teams)
  • recorded teaching (e.g. videos on Tapestry, school website or Teams)
  • printed paper packs produced by teachers (e.g. workbooks, worksheets)
  • textbooks and reading books pupils have at home
  • commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences (e.g. Purple Mash)

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

We expect all children to engage in remote learning unless they are unwell or have an exceptional circumstance that has been discussed with the school leaders. Parents/carers should support their children in setting up routines, accessing equipment and by providing a space to study where ever possible. We understand that children may not be able to complete all the work every day. In such cases, parents should contact the class teacher through Teams in order that the school is able to support the child in the best way possible.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

The class teacher will be able to see daily who has and has not completed their work. The class teacher will contact the parent/carer via email to see if they can support the pupil. If no response is given by email, a text message or a phone call will happen within 24 hours of the uncompleted assignments.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

In EYFS, the work will be assessed through Tapestry comments sent back to the parents/carers. For Years 1-6, children will receive feedback on the assignments that they have been set via Teams. Teachers will be giving whole class live feedback on any live lessons during the day too.

Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils will not be able to access the remote learning that is being set. We acknowledge the difficulties that this may place on families and we will work with parents/carers to support these pupils. Children with EHCPs will have a remote learning timetable/activities based on their provision map and this will be supported by the SENCO within the school. The family support worker will also touch base with these families once a week via the phone and put them into contact with any outside agency support that they need too.
